AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN

Toss: Pakistan

15-Apr-1993
Toss: Pakistan.

A despondent Border admitted afterwards that it would be a travesty if Australia reached the semi-finals. The loss of their last eight wickets for 56 (of which Mark Waugh scored 30) typified the World Cup holders' desperate campaign. Australia were disadvantaged by batting in the evening, when dew added to the swing of the ball. Earlier conditions were easier, though Aamir Sohail was caught behind off a Reid no-ball before scoring. He then took his personal aggregate to 307 in six innings, putting on 78 in 20 overs with Ramiz Raja and 77 in 16 with Javed Miandad. Steve Waugh's three wickets put a brake on the later innings.

Pakistan's bowlers were rewarded for keeping a good length. Aqib Javed quickly removed Moody and Boon, but Marsh, batting 34 overs for 39, and the more forceful Jones added 85, before Jones was caught on the extra-cover boundary trying to hit the leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed. When Marsh fell, only Mark Waugh delayed Pakistan's victory. The tense struggle to reach the last four was reflected in disciplinary fines of $A250 each for Sohail, Moin Khan and Whitney.
Man of the Match: Aamir Sohail. Attendance: 21,214.
