ENGLAND v ZIMBABWE

Toss: England

15-Apr-1993
Toss: England.

In the upset of the tournament, Cup favourites England were bowled out by Zimbabwe, ten runs short of a paltry target of 135. Zimbabwe earned their first points of the competition and their first win after 18 defeats since beating Australia on their World Cup début in 1983. On that day, Houghton was dismissed for nought. Now he top-scored with 29, and the ducks were collected by Gooch and Hick, a very junior member of Zimbabwe's 1983 party. Ironically, Zimbabwe owed victory to their much-derided bowling. A bowlers' pitch was no excuse for England, who had enjoyed the same advantage. Gooch departed first ball, a feather in the cap of Brandes, whose single spell plucked four prize wickets. Just as heroic were Shah and Traicos, whose 20 overs cost a mere 33 runs. At 43 for five Stewart joined Fairbrother for the biggest stand of the match, a painfully slow 52 in 24 overs. Fairbrother, still suffering from a stomach infection, batted over two hours without reaching the boundary. England narrowly ran out of wickets before overs.
