INDIA v PAKISTAN

Toss: India

15-Apr-1993
Toss: India.

India won without much difficulty when Pakistan lost their last eight wickets for 68 runs, but the neighbours' first World Cup encounter was marred by a less palatable confrontation, between More and Javed Miandad. The wicket-keeper's over-optimistic appeal for a leg-side catch led to verbal exchanges, and later Miandad mockingly leapt up and down, in apparent imitation. After the umpires made their report (minus the dialogue, which they could not understand), match referee Ted Wykes asked the tour managers to sort matters out. More had the better of the cricketing contest, with two catches, a stumping and the run-out of Imran Khan, while Miandad took 34 overs to score 40, leaving his colleagues with a tall order. Though he added 88 for the third wicket with Aamir Sohail, it was Sohail who caught the eye. India had dropped Shastri and asked Jadeja, in his second international, to open. He acquitted himself well, but once again the finest innings came from Tendulkar, unbeaten on 54 from 62 deliveries. He put on 60 in eight overs with Kapil Dev.

Man of the Match: S. R. Tendulkar. Attendance: 10,330.
