Doubts surround availability of players

Zimbabwe board postpones Twenty20 tournament

Cricinfo staff

February 13, 2008

Zimbabwe Cricket has postponed its domestic Twenty20 competition which was due to start this week, and it is rumoured that the Faithwear Cup, the List A one-day competition which was scheduled to take place immediately after, is also in doubt.

There is no official word on the fate of either tournament, but sources close to the board told Cricinfo that those taking part were told that they were being postponed "indefinitely". Unofficially, it is reported that there are not enough players of a decent standard to fill sides as both the Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Provinces sides are in action.

The news is reminiscent of the situation in 2006 when ZC postponed the Logan Cup, and although officials steadfastly refused to accept that it had been cancelled, it was never held.

Meanwhile, Westerns won both the 50-over inter-provincial tournament and the Twenty20 tournament for B sides. However, someone who watched several of the matches told Cricinfo that the standard of the cricket " was extremely poor". He added: "The logistics were a shambles. Umpires came late or did not turn up ... and as some scorers also failed to turn up, the scoring was obviously not accurate."

  • Cricinfo was unable to get any comment from ZC. Its officials refuse to speak to us as they object to our coverage of the game inside the country.
