a high wide no-ball and England win it in anticlimactic fashion! Oh lordie, Selman just lost her bottle at the crucial moment there. She was emotionally gone before the ball was bowled, and though Dunkley can't connect on the pull, it matters not! England seal 5-0!
WI Women vs ENG Women, 5th T20I at Derby, WI-W in ENG, Sep 30 2020 - Match Result
ENG Women won by 3 wickets (with 3 balls remaining)
This is the lowest match aggregate (83) involving ENG Women & WI Women in WT20Is
Taylor has broken the record for most catches by a fielder (34) in WT20Is for WI-W, going past King's 32
9.50pm And with that, Knight helps herself to the series trophy, wanders off to post for a photo "with her mates", and hoists it afloat to an empty ground with a few echoing cheers on the balcony! That's the end of the festivities, the end of the weirdest but one of the most oddly uplifting international summers of all time. It looked like being a damp squib ending, but it ended up being a fittingly ludicrous contest. Well done everyone. On to the next one!
And for England's women, that looks like being New Zealand in February, with a stop-over at the WBBL in the immediate future. But for us at ESPNcricinfo, we've still got the T20 Blast knock-outs to come. Join us then, but from Miller, Matt, Alan, Valkerie and Paul Muchmore on drums, goodnight!
Heather Knight had flashbacks to Canterbury in the Ashes. Less said the better. "We've seen some real progress, taking the game on and being positive. We want to keep getting better as a team and peak at the right time."
"We've been very lucky as players to get some cricket on, grateful to Derby, to West Indies, we managed to get some cricket in which might not have been the case earlier in the summer. it's been tough living in the bubble but they've been outstanding the way they've conducted themselves."
Stafanie Taylor "A brilliant game, one of the best I've played so far. I enjoyed it."
On her catch: "we call it a blinder, in the sense that you don't see it!"
"This was an impromptu tour, but we had a good few weeks to get ourselves in. It's for others to reflect and see where they can improve. But you get to spend time working with coaches on skills and that's something to look at going forward."
Next up, the Big Bash for many of West Indies women. They had a tough tour, but there's gratitude for them coming over in the first place.
Sarah Glenn is Player of the Series. Wickets and key runs. "Amazing, especially not playing cricket for so long, it's very special, and at my home ground. Credit to the girls and the staff for getting us ready for this tournament. Having more opportunity to get up the order has gained me more experience."
Shamilia Connell is Player of the Match for her three wickets. "Being our last game we had to give it our all, the captain gave me a job to do." She enjoyed the skiddy conditions, hitting the gloves hard.
9.34pm Well, that was fun! I had visions of the Super Over when England were kamikazeing their way through that final over, but they made it in the end. The rookies Sarah Glenn and Sophia Dunkley holding their nerve through the tricky middle overs (all two of them) to recover from some slightly headless slogging from their seniors. What would you rather be doing at 9.30 on a Wednesday evening in nearly October?
David: "Well done England, windies just not good enough though "
kmac: "This somehow reminds me of first Women's Ashes ODI. 5 wides off Brunt. Total anti-climax. *facepalm*"
Richard: "Without wishing to sound too harsh, those no balls are unforgivable..." I fear Selman's skipper feels the same...
At last, the fielders come in from the rope to defend the single. Selman looks like she's eaten her cat
Venky vootla: "Batswoman not batsman"... as far as I am aware, they still call themselves batsman, or batters at a pinch ...
hoicked to the leg side... and another no-ball! Oh lordie, that's scandalous. Stafanie Taylor is aghast. It's a free hit, and one from three now!
Sophie Ecclestone can hold a bat...
another flog across the line, another suicidal second! An easy single to make it three for three, but the girls have been watching Stokes in the World Cup final too closely, and keep burning their wickets! Wilson can't make her ground. This is getting squeaky again!
West Indies have far too many players back on the rope! Singles will win it...
a gallop to the pitch, a drill to cover, another easy single, but Glenn takes on the second run, and loses! Henry with the shy, Campbelle with the gather... off come the bails. And it's been a fine effort from the rookie, but did she need to risk the second? Dunkley is off strike with a new batsman in
that's the shot to midwicket, picked off with a swish to the leg side, and Dunkley drops her head and charges for the crucial first run, making time to canter back for the second!
Selman to finish it off... no extras now... there's no midwicket, which is a careless hole in these circumstances
Nick T: "Yes, John T, England's senior players have panicked."
Sven : "Call off the wedding!!! A frosty night ahead in the Brunt-Sciver household. " Gosh, I hadn't considered that added factor in the run-out!
very full, swinging out to square leg. This is good from England, singles every ball, but a boundary would really settle any nerves.
good delivery again, following Dunkley as she makes room to leg, an under-edged hoick to backward square
a wild outside-edged thrash! High over the covers, and she's got enough bat on it to clear point and skip away for a second precious run ...
Richard: "As far as cricket matches go, this is bonkers!" Who needs the IPL...?
well bowled, but good opportunistic running as a blockhole ball thumps the pad and deflects to the off side
tight line, shaping into the batsman, and that's superb running! Glenn worked the shot well, taking pace off to deep midwicket, and immediately called for two and made it with a dive
John T: "So much for England wining it by running 1s and 2s ! - it's bish, bash, bosh, out cricket." Well quite
rushes down the wicket, Dottin follows her to leg, and a wild pull deflects off the knee behind square
West Indies are brawling now! It's all up for grabs. Dead-rubber? Not with two unproven England future stars at the crease, and West Indies gagging to avoid 5-0
opens the face, and that's clever from Glenn, running down to third man, at the perfect pace to return for two
stunning take from Taylor in the covers! That's utterly brilliant! A full-blooded cover drive from Brunt, the full fury of her unleashed bat, but Taylor watched it off the willow, dived full-stretch to her left, and clung on in both hand s to turn the contest upside-down!
Rakesh Sampat: "Connell began by conceding a boundary before taking those two wickets. Can she do an encore here??"
crashed out to point, and after a chaotic gather, Connell completes the run-out! A reverse of Monty Panesar at Auckland, she dives too early, and has to swim along the turf, stretching to break the stumps as Sciver turns in vain!
Rakesh Sampat: "COME ON WI!!! One more good over and you can be wearing those lovely smiles on the plane back home.."
outside off, Sciver gives herself room to drill a cut to deep point, the sweeper tidies up
back of a length, rolls the wrists out to point, Dottin goes for the hero shy, and Campbelle is knocked off her feet as it comes in at the keeper's end
England are halfway there in good time, but they are leaking wickets...
banged in short, and Sciver nails her pull! It was a tight, cramping line, but Sciver stood tall, on the back foot, and carted it with wonderful bat speed through square leg!
Sophia Dunkley and Sarah Glenn look like England's next biffers off the production line... Connell will continue
battered hard back at Selman's shins, a ricochet to mid-on, but the end of an over that improved after flirting with disaster
Brunty. This is her moment...
a top-edged swipe, into the covers, Naton steadies herself, and swallows the chance! It's a rollercoaster out there. Enough ebb and flow for a session of Test cricket, let alone 11 legal deliveries!
good deliver.... that's never a wide! Very harsh, a fine outswinger, I thought that was clearly inside the line, but the umpire thought otherwise...
